What is CBD Oil and How Does it Work?
CBD (cannabidiol) is a cannabinoid extracted from the cannabis plant (Cannabis sativa). It is 1 of over 100 cannabinoids found in cannabis.
Although cannabidiol is from cannabis, it does not have intoxicating effects like THC. THC is the cannabinoid responsible for the high people get when smoking or ingesting “marijuana.”
Cannabinoids are oil-soluble compounds that can be infused easily into fats such as coconut oil, olive oil, or butter. Most CBD you can buy over the counter comes infused into MCT oil (fractionated coconut oil) or hemp seed oil.
Regularly incorporating CBD oil in your diet may encourage more calmness, lower stress levels, and feeling more relaxed. You may also notice that taking it helps with achy muscles and joints.
Since CBD doesn’t produce a euphoric high, you might not feel its calming effects immediately. However, after a few days of enjoying CBD-infused food, you may experience a host of health benefits.
Rules to Follow When Cooking with CBD Oil
Here are the six rules to follow if you want to benefit from using CBD oil in cooking.
1. Use a high-quality CBD
There’s no substitute for a high-quality CBD oil or isolate to infuse food with cannabidiol. Reputable products will have lab results that confirm they are free from pesticides, heavy metals, and other contaminants.
If you aren’t sure where to get CBD Isolate, you can buy small amounts right on our website for a good price. CBD Isolate comes in powder form and easily dissolves into any fats. Since our isolate is 99.9% CBD by a lab test, adding 1 gram of isolate = approximately 1000mg. Every 0.1g weighed out will equal about 100mg.
Here are the steps to incorporate it into any carrier (butter, olive oil, MCT oil, Hemp Seed Oil, Avocado Oil, Coconut Oil, etc).
- Heat amount of oil or butter in the recipe you are using in a small pot on medium heat
- Weigh CBD Isolate (every 0.1g = 100mg of CBD)
- Add the desired amount of CBD Isolate to the pot and stir until incorporated
- Add the infused butter/oil into the recipe as called for
If you prefer to use an oil-based CBD product instead of an isolate, you can use any oil or brand you prefer. For example, if you want to use our 1000mg Vanilla Caramel Full Spectrum Tincture or GreenMed Isolate Tincture, you would:
- Measure the required dosage (1ml 1000mg = 33mg CBD ; 1ml 1500mg = 50mg CBD).
- Add it to your carrier oil or butter
- Follow the same steps as above, using the CBD Oil instead of isolate powder
We typically suggest people start with 10-25mg per serving, but you can dose however you see fit.

2. Incorporate CBD oil with healthy fats
The body absorbs CBD oil better when consumed together with fats. This means that it’s easy to infuse your favorite oil — coconut, avocado, olive, flaxseed — with CBD oil. For some indulgence, CBD also works well in butter.
3. Don’t heat CBD oil to high temperatures
CBD oil oxidizes quickly when heated and becomes bitter. Additionally, cannabinoids and terpenes in the oil may lose their effectiveness. The best way to cook with CBD oil is to add it to vinaigrettes, finishing oils, smoothies, lattes, or your favorite breakfast cereal.
Light heat is fine, but keep in mind that the higher and longer oil is on heat, the more degradation will happen. CBD has a fairly high boiling point so try and keep the heat to 300 F or lower and you should be good to go.
4. Be mindful of what you consume with CBD oil
It’s a good idea to be mindful when cooking with CBD oil and consuming alcohol. No studies show any harmful effects of combining CBD and alcohol, but it’s wise to be careful of any adverse effects if anyone consuming the food is unsure of how they respond to CBD.
Remember: everybody handles CBD and other cannabinoids differently. What may be a good dose for you, might be too little or too high for the next person. Additionally, if you decide to serve CBD-infused foods to guests, it’s a good idea to let them know that CBD can interact with certain medications that are processed in the liver. Typically these medications come with a warning about not consuming grapefruit.
5. Finally, be patient to benefit from the effects of CBD
Using CBD oil in cooking takes longer to feel the effects. A CBD tincture under the tongue generally works fast for calmness, stress, relaxation, or painful aches. Because CBD is metabolized along with food, it will take more time to be effective.
